As Virginia’s population continues to grow and the state’s data center industry expands, the demand for skilled power line workers has never been higher. The need for reliable power and telecommunications services is driving a surge in job opportunities for those trained in this essential field. With major projects underway and the power grid requiring constant maintenance and upgrades, power line workers are crucial to ensuring the lights stay on and the internet remains connected for millions of residents.

What is a Power Line Worker?

Power line workers install, remove, maintain, and repair both low- and high-voltage distribution lines and associated equipment and facilities. Power line workers are expected to work outdoors in varying and sometimes extreme weather conditions to help ensure reliable electricity for the community.

Experience Required

No experience is required to begin the Power Line Worker program. Students must be 18 years of age by the start of class to participate. This program is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in the electric utility industry.

Training Program Overview

This full-time, 14-week program will cover all fundamental aspects of power line work, including safety, climbing techniques, electrical theory, heavy equipment operation, commercial driver’s license training, and more. All exam fees, materials, and equipment are included. Students are expected to purchase their own climbing boots (with steel shanks).

Certification Details

Students will earn 7 industry-recognized credentials as part of the Power Line Worker program, setting them up for success upon program completion and entry into their careers:

  • CDL Class A
  • Heavy Equipment Operation
  • Power Industry Fundamentals
  • Power Line Worker Level 1
  • VDOT Work Zone Flagger – Intermediate
  • OSHA 10
  • First Aid/CPR
